Jason Molina 1974-2013

We were deeply saddened to learn that Jason Molina, the acclaimed songwriter behind Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Company, passed away Saturday after a long battle with alcoholism.
Molina leaves behind a vast and diverse body of work, bridging gospel, folk, and southern rock influences, anchored on his impressionistic, haunting imagery and arresting voice. We extend our sympathies and condolences to his family, friends, bandmates, and associates at Secretly Canadian.
Fans can contribute to Jason’s medical fund as a memorial gift by sending money via PayPal. Molina lacked health insurance, and in the last years of his life, his family turned to fans for direct financial support.
Sadly, our research has shown that musicians lack health insurance at nearly twice the rate of the general population. As long-time advocates for better and more affordable health-care access for musicians, we’ll be monitoring developments related to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, and will continue to work for a future where musicians in crisis will no longer have to rely on benefit shows and donation drives.
If you know a musician or music industry professional struggling with addiction, Musicares has services and resources available to help. Call them toll-free at 1.800.687.4227.
