There is a wealth of online information resources and contacts to help you plot and navigate your career path, from finding funding to connecting with record labels. Here's our guide to some of what's out there and how to find it.
General organizations and websites
The musicians' union, the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) maintains an extensive list of professional resources on its website, ranging from music-related publications to lists of booking agents.
Musical Americaoffers job postings as well as industry news. Most notably, they maintain databases of artists, presenters, festivals, competitions, record companies, artist managers, services, and other products for musicians (available by subscription only).
American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) represents a broad coalition of independent music labels. Based in New York City, A2IM represents nearly 100 labels and supports fair trade practices, including equal access to the media and the marketplace, on par with the largest companies in the industry.
Organizations supporting and promoting emerging artists
Concert Artists Guild (CAG) sponsors an annual competition; winners are offered management services including booking, marketing and publicity, as well as recording and commissioning opportunities.
Young Concert Artists (YCA) holds yearly auditions to present youthful musicians at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. They also offer management and booking services as well as publicity and promotion.
Grant providers
The New York Foundation for the Arts(NYFA) bills itself as "the nation's largest provider of funding, information and services to individual artists." The organization maintains a superb website that encompasses extensive resources on career development, arts advocacy and funding opportunities.
The Jerome Foundation provides grants to emerging artists living in Minnesota and New York City.
The Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust is terminating activities in 2009. However, this organization is providing one last round of grants for contemporary music projects in 2008.
For composers
The American Composers Forum supports composers and helps them develop new markets for their work. This includes grant and commission programs.
The American Music Center (AMC) offers a fantastic array of resources for its members, ranging from professional development workshops to its own Composer Assistance funding program. Their online magazine, New Music Box, is a smart forum for the discussion of new American music.
Meet the Composer manages a wide range of commissioning, residency, education and audience interaction programs.
The National Performing Arts Conventionwhich takes place in June in a different North American city each year, brings together Chorus America, Dance/USA, Early Music America, the League of American Orchestras, OPERA America, and Theatre Communications Group.

South by Southwest showcases thousands of groups in Austin, TX each March.
WOMEX, the World Music Expo meets in late October in Europe.
Arts Journal provides a daily digest of arts and cultural reporting, and also hosts blogs penned by a roster of well-known music critics and other arts writers.
While geared more towards literature and cultural criticism, the Journal of Higher Education's Arts & Letters Dailyregularly includes articles on music in its digest, which is published six days a week.
NYC Music Placesis a free database of rehearsal and performance spaces for instrumental and vocal musicians in all genres.
Located at Lincoln Center, the New York Public Library for the Performing Artspossesses formidable research archives and circulating collections, and also offers public programs and exhibitions. Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts offers pro bono and low-cost legal information and services to the NYC arts community. They have a special program for New York State artists called "Ask the Music Lawyer". This program addresses the complex legal and business needs of New York's musicians and composers through different services, including two years of free, music-related classes and clinics. VLA has also expanded its MediateArt Program beyond dispute resolution to handle music-related negotiations; and at certain times and dates deals with music questions on its Art Law Line.
