Stairway to Nowhere: Commerce Sec. Says Piracy Turns Royalty Rights Into “Lead Balloons”
Commerce Secretary Gary Locke this week “laid down a marker about how the administration views [digital piracy]”, calling it “unadulterated theft.” He said that piracy has “destroyed” the livelihoods of artists, turning songwriting royalties from “golden parachutes” to “lead balloons.”

Private Net Neutrality Talks Underway
In the wake of the failure of FCC-brokered industry talks, private companies including Verizon, Skype, ATT, Microsoft and the cable lobby have been meeting at the Information Technology Industry Council attempting to reach a private net neutrality agreement. ITIC head Dean Garfield says they are drafting a “pro-consumer” plan. We’ll see. Meanwhile, the FCC is planning another public inquiry on some of the wonkier details about how networks should be managed — more info on that proceeding later.

Just ahead of Apple’s unveiling of their updated Apple TV hardware and program rental policies, “people with knowledge of the proposal” claim Amazon is planning a “Netflix-like” streaming video service with a monthly subscription model. Perhaps a stream based music service isn’t too far behind?
